Speedfit John Guest fittings - Plumbing Supplies

Whether you are working on a new build, a repair or maintenance plumbing job, you need quality plumbing tools to do a quality job! hmmmm.... or maybe not!

You might find that just sometimes high quality plumbing supplies are good enough for the job. I am referring to push-fit fittings. They are sometimes also called push-to-pull, push-to-connect, push-in, push-fit, instant fittings or quick connect fittings.

Plumbers best offers a large range of push-fit fittings from the every day elbows, straights and tees to alternative connectors.  Our plumbing fittings are fast and easy to use and are available in a wide range of sizes.

Components of push-fit fittings

Benefits of push-fit fittings

They allow air or water lines to be attached without the use of tools! You might still need a tool to cut the tubing to the required length :-). These plumbing fittings are similar to the way regular compression fittings work but use a resilient O-ring for sealing and a grip ring to hold the tube in place. They are available in a wide range of sizes to suit any domestic or light commercial application and can be used on all sorts of pipe, pipe sizes for multiple purposes. In Australia these type of push fit fittings are widely used in caravans, RV's and boats.

Benefits of using these plumbing products is

  • Install and demount in seconds with no tools. No need to solder copper or glue plastic pipes
  • Fittings can be easily mounted, removed and reused
  • no tools for putting together or disconnecting
  • Quick and easy to assemble and fit.
  • Twist and lock compression for a tight seal
  • Can be fit when the connections are wet
  • Joints are rotatable after connection
  • Suited for domestic hot and cold water services, central heating systems including pressurized systems
  • Grip and seal plastic or copper pipes

The current speedfit range mainly incorporates plastic fittings and plastic collets. They still maintain the essential part of the collet design with stainless steel teeth, use plastic pipe support inserts and have a push release mechanism.

How to install John Guest Fittings ?

Simply push the fitting fully onto the pipe and twist the plastic nut clockwise to lock in place. Should the need arise to demount the connection unlock the nut and push the collet towards the body of the fitting and pull the pipe to release.

The fitting ensures an easier working environment in confined places and removes the need for hot works on site. Installation can be reduced by around 40% against traditional fixing methods.

Installation must-do's

Push fit connections are easier to make than soldered or glued connections however you need to keep in mind certain things to do it right.

The most common reasons for connection failure

  • Not pushing the pipe in far enough
  • Not having a smooth round end to the pipe
  • Too rough a pipe surface or pipe is damaged under the O-ring in the mechanism
  • Not using the correct fittings for the pipe or tube

The most common reason of failure to push-fit fittings is not pushing the pipe all the way to the stop. Pushing the pipe till the grab ring or O-ring is not enough to get a good seal. This is the most common failure reason due to inexperienced use of these connectors.

As shown above, deburring the end of the pipe is vital to avoiding damage to the O-ring on the pipe insertion. And the pipe surface under the ring must be smooth to get an adequate seal. The end of the pipe needs to be square so that it fits against the stop in the fitting and does not cause leaks. To make this easier, the pipes come with markings as shown below in red. You should cut the pipe at the cut marks so that the mark is visible and you get a quality connection.

Lastly, make sure you are using the correct fittings for the pipe. If you have a speedfit pipe or tubing ensure you use John Guest fittings only. Similarly it is recommended that you not use a John Guest fitting on a pipe that is not a speedfit pipe.It is always better to use the same brands to ensure a good correct seal.
